Case Study: Dave and Angie

Our credit union loan representative fought for us the whole way. She never stopped…
I am so thankful to all the people at the credit union that made my dream of owning a home a reality

It was 2008 and Dave and Angie, a middle-aged couple in a Portland, Oregon suburb, needed to get out of their apartment fast. They were living in an increasingly crime-ridden neighborhood.  And, to make matters worse, Dave had a heart condition and their 2-story walk-up apartment wasn’t going to work for them much longer. They weren’t sure what to do. Banks were too impersonal and they couldn’t afford much. Dave had a modest salary as a truck driver but he’d been forced into early retirement due to illness. They decided to see if Dave’s credit union, the BECU, offered home loans. The whole family had savings and checking accounts at the credit union. Dave knew after years of experience, that the credit union wouldn’t just treat them like a number and would help them find the best deal out there. And he was right. The credit union was offering a first time home buyer deal for just $500 down and a 30-year fixed rate. They’d seen nothing like that any of the other banks they had looked at. In fact, they wouldn’t have been able to buy the home they wanted without that deal. “We couldn’t have afforded this house and we wouldn’t have had the money to pay for the down payment without the first-time home buyer program at the BECU,” said Angie.  And, on top of that phenomenal deal, the loan representative at the credit union went above and beyond the call of the duty to help them through the process. “Our credit union loan representative fought for us the whole way,” explained Angie. “She never stopped.  When I look at the time line and our journey, it just boggles my mind. There were times when I didn’t think it would happen and Ro [their BECU loan representative] would make me believe it would happen. I am so thankful to all the people at the credit union who helped make my dream of owning a home come true. We couldn’t have done it without them.” The couple now lives in a one-level, 3-bedroom house in a middle class neighborhood outside of Vancouver, Washington, paying just $135 a month more than what they were paying for their 2-bedroom apartment in the more questionable neighborhood.
